The Holberg Conversation: “Trustworthiness before trust”

A conversation with the 2017 Holberg Laureate Onora O’Neill about trustworthiness and trust.

It is often claimed that trust has declined. But do we in fact have good evidence for this being the case? And is trust as a general kind of attitude, something we should aim at restoring? The aim of this conversation is to move the attention from trust to trustworthiness and to explore the ethical and epistemic standards for a justified and intelligent placing of trust.

Onora O’Neill will be joined in conversation by Camilla Serck-Hanssen, professor of philosophy at the University of Oslo, President of the Norwegian Kant Society and Vice President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
