Interest in the Holberg Prize and the Nils Klim Prize continues to grow. Both prizes have received a record number of nominations for 2027, reflecting strong engagement from the international and Nordic research communities.

By the 15 June deadline, the 2027 Holberg Prize received 136 valid nominations for 115 unique candidates, while the 2027 Nils Klim Prize received 47 valid nominations for 47 unique candidates. This marks the highest number of nominations ever received for both prizes since their establishment in 2004.

Awarded annually, the Holberg Prize recognises outstanding contributions to research in the humanities, social sciences, law and theology.

The Nils Klim Prize is also awarded annually, and honours an outstanding scholar under the age of 40 from or in a Nordic country, for exceptional contributions to research in the same academic fields.

The selection process

A record number of nominations also means an increasingly challenging task for the academic committees, who are responsible for the scholarly assessment of the nominations. Over the coming months, the Holberg Committee and the Nils Klim Committee will review all eligible nominations and finally submit their recommendations to the Holberg Board, who makes the final decision on who should receive the Prizes.

The 2027 Holberg Prize and Nils Klim Prize laureates will be announced in March and the Prizes will be conferred at an award ceremony during the Holberg Week in June.

New call for nominations

While the nomination deadline for 2027 has passed, we are now receiving nominations for the 2028 Holberg Prize and the 2028 Nils Klim Prize. Scholars holding academic positions at universities, academies and other research institutions are invited to nominate candidates.

In the online form, it is possible to save your progress and continue at a later time, or also to update your submission with new information and attachments until the deadline.

The nomination deadline for both prizes is 15 June 2027.
